How many times has the little voice inside my head whined “No, don’t go for a run. It’s hot out.”
But then I realise the reality is I live in New York. Not on the equator. I can definitely overcome some muggy heat. But that being said, it is important to take care when working out in summer sunshine. So read on for some tips on how to beat sun stroke, sunburn and other possible summer workout collateral damage.
+ Hydrate. At risk of sounding like a really broken record, hydration is super important. You need enough water to sweat out any yuckies you have in your system and to cool down when you work out.
+ Timing is everything. Avoid the middle of the day; if you’re going to go out, try to make it early or later when the sun isn’t out in full force.
+ SPF. At risk of sounding like your mother, sunscreen is important. Just throw some on and leave any worries about all the fun that comes with a sunburn behind.
+ Gear up. Or well, down. Wear as little as possible to maximise sweat evaporation; it’s how your body keeps cool after all. Also, go for light colours as they attract less light (I always have trouble ditching my beloved sweat-proof black).
+ Go for the water sports. They’re the best part of summer! From just swimming to surfing, try something new!
Simple enough right? Also be sure that you don’t over-do it. You should probably go get some shade or air conditioning if you’re dizzy, have a fast pulse or breath and or feel feverish. And remember, worse comes to worse, there’s always the air conditioned gym.
How do you keep cool during summer workouts?

great tips, unfortunately I fall into the category of being disheartened to work out in summer, but waking up earlier and working out at 5am does help xx

Oh wow, major respect! I’ve always wanted to do that but always find myself majorly struggling. Power to you! xx
Yeah I always make excuses to avoid working out. Thanks for the tips, hopefully it motivates me 😉

Great tips, thanks!
I tend to postpone working out all the time… and I really shouldn’t. But this made me want to go actually work out. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
